Faux Selfies

This piece depicts my alter ego in various settings. Her persona is based in that of the singer Lana Del Rey, who has a very vintage aesthetic reminiscent of the 1950s. Some of the images reflect 50s memorabilia and also the role of women at the time.Women were largely seen as beautiful things to look at and accompanies to the men in their life. We see her with multiple lovers and the underlying turmoil of her tumultuous love life. She is very emotional and sometimes turns to spirituality and the occult to help deal with her emotional life. She loves to use escapism and to daydream about herself in tropical and exotic locations. There is a stereotype that women are "too emotional", but for Carmen this ability to emote has always been a strength of hers that she uses to her full advantage. Some of the pieces also have nods to my favorite horror movies, like The Wicker Man and IT. She may be sad at times, but she allows her emotions to show and flow through her rather than hide them away and let them fester, she would rather cry in public than put on a fake smile for the world. She loves glamour and looking beautiful but does not do it for the attention of men, she loves her personal style for herself. Because she looks so beautiful, men assume she is not clever, when in fact she can outsmart them and there games every single time. She is always one step ahead and makes sure that no man is taking advantage of her love and kindness.
